    Non-scrolling background without using layers?

Is there a good way to have a static background that doesn't scroll without using layers? Layers slow my game down an unacceptable amount, and I have some 5,000 tiles so I can't just make everything an active object.

Try the background images object. It should be what you are looking for

If greyhill ever updates it for HWA, it would be amazing. Right now, Pattern won't work, or it would be PRECISELY what I needed for my game, too. It can load external images and place it behind the backdrop layer, on the same 'gameplay' layer.

But it scrolls along with everything else!

There should be an option in its properties that says either 'Follow the frame' or 'Display as background'. Change it and see.

    -_-

you can position the background images object in-game. Just use its x/y set position functions to constantly move it to behind the screen, and it will be 'static'.

    I see.

Unfortunately, doing that slows the game to a crawl about 10x as bad as using layers does.

I tested it with a 32x32 image and an "Always" set X,Y to Left and Top edges of window.

I think you should upload your .mfa to the File Archive and let us take a look. This sounds very unusual.
