Getting your Java Mobile games out there

    Hey all,

I've just been researching the mobile game scene while making a prototype, and came up with a couple of links, and millions more questions.

I wondered if anyone here would be interested in pooling knowledge together into a thread, to help each other out, and provide anyone else coming along with a direction. Of course, that's assuming you guys feel this is the place for something like that - I just thought it was appropriate, given the new Java Mobile capabilities in MMF.

For my part, I've been looking at the free, advertising-driven mobile games sites. It seems like a great fit for what MMF Java can do at present - bigger titles might need to wait for a save game option!

Going off some threads at Indiegamer, it seems like Hovr and Gamejump are two of the bigger places to get your games onto. The idea with these sites is that people can download games for free onto phones - they just get given ads at the beginning and end of the play session.

...And that's all I really know at this stage. I have no idea about ways to test different builds out, how to determine the major phones you should make builds for, and many other things.

Sorry if this is a bad idea, or doesn't fall into the scope of the forums - I'd just love a chance to get some knowledge together.

    Sweet!

This is a sensible place to post and I don't see any problems. If it can speed up any mobile software delivery for a bargain then I'm interested.

No problems discussing this as long as no one goes out and offers specific jobs/distribution deals. As always these has to be cleared by an admin.

Nokia recently announced they would launch an online store for their line of products. The idea is completely copy pasted from Iphone Appstore, which has proved a huge success. So as a publishing platform I can't wait to try this one out.

You can find the Nokia ovi site here:
    http://www.ovi.com

    And the upcomming Store at:
    http://store.ovi.com

It looks like Nokia promises 70% revenue share.

Reading up about the ovi store in their forums, came across this...
"... all Java apps will need to have gone through the "Java Verfied" process..."

Could potentually make things a little painful.

I think the Blackberry app store coming soon (a few weeks away?) could also be of interest. It has a US $200 fee, which gives you 10 apps you can upload. While the Blackberry user base would be different from something like the iPhone user base, it has the advantage of being new - you could get in there BEFORE the place is flooded with 6000+ games...

Good input ionside. That verification is going to make things a bit difficult.

The Blackberry store is interesting though. and the fee is pretty reasonable.
