Gradient Background - that can change at runtime?

I want to be able to have a gradient background (or active on background layer) that can change at runtime. Is their an engine for this? I know with actives you can replace colors and was just thinking there would be a simpler way to do the change of colors than just changing it in the event editor Y pixel by Y pixel... especially when it has to be 9999 pixels by 9999 pixels

In further detail, it's a sky background that will cover a user changed play area size. That's why it has to be editable - bigger/smaller so that it fills the whole screen, not just the largest every time because that takes up a lot of framerate and time at runtime.

Re: Gradient Background - that can change at runtime?

Whoooa! HUGE slowdown! My game was at 50 Fps and now its down to 7. That's not good! what can I do that would keep the frame rate? I'm just looking for a nice looking background that will show the height the player has climbed/fallen. I used a layer to make it not scroll horizontally so that doesn't affect it, but the frame rate is still SUPER low... and the height was only 1818 out of the 9999 max!

EDIT: Please excuse the double post

PS: I also noticed that wrapping it instead of not scrolling it changes the fps to about 9.
