    Moving a player by increments?

not sure if increments is the right word but basically what i was wondering is how i would go about making a character that when the user taps a directional button will automatically move across the screen a certain distance and then stop?
i'm hoping to use the info to make a staircase movement where the player can move up one step by tapping the directional button or keep moving up all the steps by holding the button.

    any help is appreciated
    thanks

This is called grid movement. I have an example on my website "Fast Loop Grid Movement 2 Example" that you can adapt to your stairs.

Re: Moving a player by increments?

Thanks guys, I made my own (very basic) stairway grid movement based of the concepts in your examples and it works great. My only problem now is getting a smooth transition from the PMO object to my stairway grid movement - i'm trying to get it to respond similar to castlevania's stairways in that i want the player to automatically move/slide into position for the first step when pressing the up button if there overlapping it.I don't suppose there's anyone with some ideas as to how i might acheive something to this effect? is there a way i can make my character automatically move in a short L shape?

    any helps appreciated

Maybe set the Y movement to -1(or simular) and the X to +1 (or simular), for right movement, first before moving with the grid movement.
