Screen Size for (relatively) HD graphics

    Hi,
I'm currently looking into the idea of making my game with HD -ish graphics and i was just wondering what the best window size to use would be if i want it to still be playable on most monitors, but allow for detailed drawn artwork rather than artwork created strictly at the pixel by pixel level. Is the default size of 600 x 480 safest or could i probably go larger?

    any help is appreciated
    thanks

My computer/monitor runs at "Full HD" which is 1920x1080. Though if you make your game at 720p - 1280x720 then that is also considered HD and will be a reasonable resolution for most PCs.

Wow that's quite large (doesn't fully fit on my new monitor), perphaps HD isn't quite what i meant?, but you know big graphics rather than the pixel by pixel stuff.

800x600 would be a quarter of my screen, and probably gives you enough room for decent art. But in the end, draw the sprites to the size you want and then set the window size so that when playing the game you can see enough.

1024x768 is the new 800x600 as far as standard, and gives you a lot of space.

But by HD you mean High Definition graphics quality or resolution? Because if first one you can have even 640x480 or smaller but remember to use maximum number of colors. And if resolution You can use one from above.

Oh right. If you didn't actually mean "HD" but rather "Good Quality" graphics, I would agree with Pkeod. 1024x768 is a good screen resolution to make games for.

Re: Screen Size for (relatively) HD graphics

Yeah i guess i did actually mean good quality graphics, but i'm still trying to decide whether to attempt pixel by pixel or to do something similar to Duel Toys,Jack Forest, or Bullets of a revolver (resized graphics - i think?)at the moment.
If anyone can think of some other good examples other than the ones i've already mentioned of this kind of thing, it would be a big help in deciding and Thanks for your responses regarding the screen sizes it should be helpfull.

It really depends on your art style and your abilities. If you're capable with photoshop and using alpha channels then you can make some really slick looking games. If you're a super awesome pixel artist then go for that instead.

Higher resolution pixel art, while it will take a very long time, will look really nice if you do it well

Well i guess i'm more familar with working in Photoshop than i am with making pixel art, but i've never really worked at such small scale.
