How to make Metroid style explorable maps?

Does anyone know a relatively simple way of doing so? Or at least doing it at all?

    Thanks in advance,
    Matt/Oreo

Take a look at Zoric on my website. It has a realtime mapping system simular what you seek.

It's really hard to look through all the code to understand the mapping system, could you isolate the code or make an easier to understand example?
