    Recommended Memory Limit for 512 MB RAM

    Hi all,

    My game is going to appeal to a target audience that might own low-end PCs with only 512 MB RAM. My question is, how high do you believe I can safely go in terms of memory before I will start running into problems on these systems? I don't have a low-end system to test on, so I thought I'd ask here.

    Currently, some frames go higher than 300 MB of memory thanks to several animated active objects. Is this too high? If so, I might have to up the system requirements to 1 GB RAM.

    I think alot would depend on what OS the PCs are running and what else they might have loaded in memory, but you should at least look at the OS recommended memory settings before taking into account your own frame memory sizes.

    I recently upgraded a PC from 128MB of RAM to 256MB. That's low-end :P
    It's running Windows XP, and uses ~200MB baseline. So a 300MB-of-RAM game should just fit happily on a Windows XP PC with 512MB of RAM. You'd need more RAM for a Vista or Windows 7 PC though.

    Thanks for the answers, guys! Since my game is going to be free-to-play, instead of listing "system requirements", I might call it "recommended requirements". That way, people with low-end PCs can always download and try the game out, even if their memory is iffy.
