String Appear in Front of an Active Object

How does one get a string to appear in front of an active object? Even when I move the string to the front and the active object to the back, the string still wont show in front. I'm trying to make a pause menu that appears in front of the play screen.

Uncheck 'Display as background' in the String object's Properties > Display Options.

Or you can also use a layer that's above that one. That's what I do for menus, scores/lives, etc. That can be handy because then all you have to do is toggle the visibility of the layer for a menu.

Oh ok wasn't aware of that. What exactly does it do? I haven't had problems with it before. Unless you're just referring to things like strings, etc.? But I use backdrops all the time on foreground layers and haven't had issues.

It's background objects with "follow the frame" off that causes glitches.

Well, I just tested that, and I didn't see any glitches. So I'm a bit confused as to what the issue is here. Tried it in both HWA and standard. Is it only on certain video cards or something?

Or is it only if you use a lot of layers? Testing this using only 2 layers didn't produce any glitches.

Edit: The only sort of glitch if you can call it that is that if you have Follow the Frame checked on a string and you scroll the screen, the string sort of blinks very slightly, but it's not that noticeable. But that happens whether you're using one layer or multiple layers so that's not the issue. Also, I used 4 layers with strings on each instead of the original 2 I tried and didn't have problems.

Either way, if you're just using it for a menu, you're not going to be scrolling anyway, so it wouldn't matter if you left Follow the Frame on or off if there are any other sort of glitches I'm not seeing. If it only occurs with Follow the Frame off, just leave it on when you have a menu on an upper layer.
