    multiple screens?

I question I got about the iOS runtime is about how it handles the multiple screen sizes iOS devices can have, like the 480x320 from old iPhones/iPods, 1024x768 from iPad or the retina display... Is there a way to check the screen resolution at runtime so we can manage som reorganization of screen elements?

The runtime automatically zooms in or out your application to fit the screen. YOu have nothing to do for this.
Any size will work on any device. (they have to be one device exact size, like 480x320, it will not work with 500x300)

    Re: multiple screens?

So if we made an iPad app (1024x768) it would automatically get zoomed out? If we did it this way would it affect the running speed on an iPhone for instance?

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Re: multiple screens?

i am interested in this as well, what is optimum screensize to look good on both ipad\iphone, while still running at least as fast as the SWF runtime on a high-speed desktop computer? my current game sizes that i use with the flash-runtime are 550x400, 640x480, 700x480 and 728x500.

    Re: multiple screens?

All of my games have either been 324x480 or 480x320, and to be honest they look alright zoomed x2.

With regards to speed, that all depends on what things you have in you games.. because an iPad 2 runs a lot faster than a 3G... so unfortunately its all about testing. Which is why you should try to test with the lowest device that you intend to ship with... if it works ok on that, then speed wise it will be fine on better devices.

    Re: multiple screens?

What about a 1024x768 application running on iPhone? It'll crop and scale? As in will it crop to 960x600 and then scale down for 3GS or what?

    Re: multiple screens?

Games with an iPad resolution (1024x768) on an iPhone will become scaled. This will, however, end up with black bars on the left and right of the application.

Same goes for running a game with an iPhone 4 resolution (960x640) on the iPad. But with the bars being on the top and bottom.

    Re: multiple screens?

This is actually terrible (black bars when scaling an app down from 1024x768 to 960x768 etc.) having black bars will just lead to getting angry user reviews... There should be an option to just crop the left and right sides of the screen a little in fit the height or width depending on the app's orientation.

    Re: multiple screens?

If you don't want the bars then release a separate version for iPad - many developers do this. I'v also seen a universal game that had black bars on iPad - haven't noticed any angry user reviews about that

    Re: multiple screens?

^ I was gonna say, probably better to re-crop your app to 1024x768 and call it 'HD' and release it as iPad only (you can set it to iPad only using XCode) and charge a little extra. Most devs do it and most iPad users are happy to pay the extra. Some even buy both.
