Turing a PC title into an iOS one!!

I've just been reading the documention that comes with the MMF iOS Exporter, learning all the in's and out's of doing this. I already have a project built for iPad. !!!Income!!! which was released a few months back for PC was made with the iPad in mind. Now I'm looking at porting it over to iOS.

From what I've been reading in the supplied documentation, it seems like a rather daunting task. There are now new sound management systems in use, one of sound effects and one for background music, and there are multiple ways to build your project to send it over to the Mac in the first place. This is definitely going to be a new learning experience.

Just wondering if anyone has any tips or advice on tackling the task of porting a PC title to iOS?

I have just started to port a project over, and I am having a few performance issues, but I am working them out.

It seems like there is quite a lot to get to grips with, but it's just another learning curve to take, and I don't think it's to great of one.

The sounds thing is really easy, it's just an extra check box when you select the sample. Decide if it's background music or not and select accordingly.

Did this with MegaCity, as long as you refer to the documentation you'll be fine. The only real difference is that you have to be extra vigilant and efficient at keeping memory use as low as you can.

Thnaks for the tips. I've started the port of !!!Incoming!!! to iOS. It's great having the error log appear when you go to Build as it identifies all the problems for you, good stuff.

Ok, hit a bit of a mystery... Got !!!Incoming!!! to export from MMF and I transfered the file to my Mac. The project loaded fine into Xcode but when I run it it doesn't run. Instead I am sent back out to the iPad display screen where the icon is there. Clicking on the icon makes the icons go off screen like the App is about to start but then it throws me back to the icons.

Not entirely sure what's wrong here but I'm wondering is it a memory issue? Any ideas?

Try a clean in xcode. Go to Build -> Clean then after its done, try running your project again.

new sound management systems? i haven't noticed that, but now when you say it, there is a box "play with audio player" on the samples dialog, what does it mean?

i usually get the instant-quit bug the first time i run an application, just hit the run button one more time.

Use audio player for large music or sound files (eg mp3s). From what I gathered from the documentation, audioplayer plays the file directly from storage memory, not RAM. So audioplayer = slower, but doesn't pre-load the file into memory, or something to that effect.

Re: Turing a PC title into an iOS one!!

Ok, I'm about ready to give up on !!!Incoming!!! working on iOS. I have tried editing the game, making changes to it, removing transitions, etc., and MMF builds the file just fine. I take it into Xcode, build an run it, but it won't start?!? The icon is there, but when it launches I get about a fraction of a second of the music starting and then it just throws me back out to the icons screen. The only thing I'm wondering is could it be the music format? I think it's OGG. Is that ok? Should I make it WAV instead? The only thing is that then the file size will be huge!!

    Any tips appreciated.

Re: Turing a PC title into an iOS one!!

That might be it. iOS doesn't support ogg, so it converts it to wav, which makes music files huge. Try using mp3s instead. This might be your issue as it could be that taking up too much memory.
