    For devices with little memory, the memory is crucial. Your application might be at the very limit of out of memory. In this case, memory-cleanup messages are sent to all the applications, and they have to release as much data as possible. For a MMF application, this means releasing textures and unused stuf. It does take a lot of time.

    while it's not a 3g, my 2nd gen touch is somewhere roughtly between a 3g and 3gs in cpu power and I found at 30fps, 480x320 once I hit past around 155 events the game would start to suffer no matter what corner cuts and trimming I did, and I was using rather little ram too and cutting my level tiles up into repeatable squares and such.

    I am still impressed that converting from MMF to iOS still runs that well so mad props to clickteam, however it's an old device and on my newer 4g touch i've had not one single slowdown problem yet with about 5 times as much stuff going on and screen scrolling, transparencies and add/subtract ink effects.
