Problem with game (question)

Hi everyone, I'm working on a game and at the beginning of the game I have a random counter set to trigger explosion sounds,.what I want is a flash of light to be set every time the counter is = to the value I have set,.but off the screen on the left just to flash that side of the screen, but only about 25 to 50 pixels of the screen. An explosion but only seeing the flash from the explosion on that side.
