    Light around player in darkness

    I have this top down view game And I would like to have this light around my character (a circle) while the rest is dark.
    Does anyone know if this is easy to do or if there's already a engine? I have searched the forums but couldn't find the right thing.

    Big semi-transparent texture with Always set to direction & position of player?
    There's also a lighting object, called something like Lamp.

    I'm currently working on a 3d top-down engine with some quite nifty lighting:

    Yeah, it's based on my old GTA engine (which used Werbad's 3d shader), but I've improved it quite a bit (incl. making it more efficient) and then on top of that I've added shadowcasting and the same subtractive effect you linked to earlier. I'm thinking about using the normal map shader for the floor texture too, just to try and cram in as many effects as possible.
