But isnt the 'kind' of imput device relevant to this thread? I mean, would it be just the same if the audio imput device was your iPod, Radio, TV, Studio Microphone or Electrical Guitar?
An audio input device or "recording device" as they are called in newer operating systems. It's a standardized term which can only mean one thing. What type of device that is generating the sound signal is irrelevant. I do not need to explain anything further, because I've provided all the information about my needs in the original post.

I think i know what you mean, DirectSound/Soundcard/ASIO stereo inputs etc like in sequencers basically, but unfortunately i don't think there is any extensions available that allow that and get the levels.

the inputs to the hardware are generally electric current and while connected to a PC, they are then programmatically registered as sampels whose locus is the amplitude of this current which all together create a curve and represents the current which I think you are reffering to it by "input volume". You can increase or decrease the value of samples and hence the input volume. You can use any extension which captures your input. MCI captures inputs from many media and all you have to do is to get these samples with respect to time.

I am sure you have succeeded in your project. I am bumping this as a hint in case one is planning to use MMF as an interface to a custom hardware as there are unfortunatly not many extensions available for the purpose. It would be an encuraging advice to the challenge of designing own devices using the available cheap hardware .

    Happy New Year
