LOADS of people have been asking me for this in AWESOME Land, it's the request I hear the most often. If the game does well enough to warrant spending time on it I'll try to create an extension, but I know that a lot of people don't bother with iCade support as it's only going to benefit the people who are A. using iPad and B. have one of these, which is probably quite a niche.
As you say, there's also the 8-bitty which when paired with iPhone interacts with iCade code. If you implement iCade support it'll work with 8-bitty, basically. I have no idea why anybody would want to prop a little phone up on the side and use a controller for it, but to each his own eh?
On the other hand, it might get you added to iCade compatibility lists which would probably actually generate sales from people who wouldn't have bought it before.
I think all that needs to be done is something along the lines of button presses also relating to a keyboard key, no idea how hard that is to implant for mmf or the exporter but it's how the icade buttons work.
Might not work for custom buttons though using that method, maybe an event you can set to press and hold a key like with normal mmf games.
man, it would be great if this extension existed. even if not everyone uses icade, i think our games would get noticed a lot more, because anyone interested in icade would see them on the supported games list.

I'm probably going to make the extension, just when I can find the time to learn the MMF2 SDK and stuff, but I'd have to go out and spend my money on an iCade...
Would really like an extension for this.

I will grab myself an 8-bitty when they're available and create the extension, just looking into the easiest ways of doing it. If ClickTeam can work bluetooth Keyboard support into an update it will be possible to create a widget which does it without an extension. If I can get it to read keypresses on a bluetooth keyboard, I can get it to support iCade.

If I was to take time out of work to develop this extension, would people be willing to donate towards it?
if it works, of course. My metroidvania game would benefit from icade support quite a bit.
i think clickteam sometimes directly support extension development, perhaps you should contact them - it would be another great thing for them to shout about when promoting the ios exporter.
