    Gradiant depth color change.

What would be the easiest way to create a gradient that changes the color of an object? For example, a led ball falling into the ocean, first turns light blue, then dark blue as it sinks deeper, then black at the bottom of the ocean.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Old Long Dragon,
thanks for the lengthy response. I meant "lead" as in a heavy metal, nothing more. Whatever the object,
really, its just a simple gradient shader that changes it hue/tone as I proceed along its ramp. The artistic direction is a bit irrelevant still, but appreciate the input.
