If you're having problems connecting the Xbox controller to your computer itself, you'll either need a wired controller (wireless with the attachable cord won't work) or a wireless controller with a wireless adapter. If you don't feel like actually mapping the controls in your game, you can download pinnacle game profiler and map the xbox controls to keyboard buttons. It works great for playing existing games with an Xbox controller.

Also depending on your OS you may need a driver to be able to use it, it won't get recognized in Windows XP SP2, for example.

I may be wrong, but google MotionJoy. I use it with my game and can use a PS3 Sixaxis controller on not just my game but any computer game that will take a controller
