Resolution To Design in For iPad 3?

I've recently begun work on a project with the iPad 3 in mind. My problem is that the iPad 3 has a ridiculous resolution that my monitor can't even display. I started working at that large resolution of 2048 x 1536, however it appears to slow down my app when testing it, even when there's next to nothing on the stage, apart from my character walking.

I tried looking around the forums for any kind of advice on it, with no real answer so I thought to make a thread to see if anyone can help me out with this issue. My reason for designing at that resolution and not just scaling it up is because, as I'm sure plenty of you are fully aware, creating a game at the bigger resolution and scaling down is better than scaling up.

Any advice on what resolution I should be designing at would be a great help and if it means that I have to design at a smaller resolution to avoid future problems, I guess I'll have no choice but to scale up .

    Thanks for your time everyone.

Why do you want to create a game at this resolution? The normal ipad resolution will still be fine i'd imagine. I think your app may take a hit running at that resolution as well...

Hi Redsquirrel. The reason I was intending to create it at that resolution is because that is the resolution of the iPad 3. I didn't want the game to be upscaled as it would pixelate (I'm working with vector graphics) so I was creating at the largest resolution as it can scale down with no pixelation to the other devices.

I guess it wouldn't really be too much of a big deal if I had no real choice but to scale it up, I just would prefer my game to look nice and sharp on the iPad 3. Would you recommend targeting a different device instead?

I could be wrong here but I don't imagine a lot of 2D games make full use of the ipad 3 resolution. Using full res graphics that big would take up a huge amount of memory.

Even if you work at the old ipad resolution the graphics won't look too pixellated as the screen is just too small to notice. If you want it sharper you could choose something in between the two and it should upscale that also.

Ah ok, thanks for the info. I guess working at 1024 x 768 should be fine then?

It will be fine. The iPad 3 has a very high DPI, so you won't notice any more pixellation than you would on any other iPad.
