Sprite and Tile editors and tools for Mac or PC

    Hi there,

    I'd be very interested in hearing software recommendations on tools that people have found work well in conjunction with MMF for game design, specifically;
    • Sprite design
    • Sprite animation
    • Tile design
    • Tile map editor / level designers

    Ones i know about are...

    PC...
    Cosmigo Pro Motion - http://www.cosmigo.com/promotion/
    GraphicsGale - http://www.humanbalance.net/gale/us/

    MAC & PC...
    GraFX2 - http://code.google.com/p/grafx2/
    Dame Editor - http://dambots.com/dame-editor/

    MAC...
    Pixen - https://github.com/philippec/Pixen

    Any other recommendations from folk?

    Rob.

Re: Sprite and Tile editors and tools for Mac or PC

Hmmm. I think this topic should go in the "Open Topic Community Forum". Regardless, its a good topic.

I've heard lots of good things about Graphics Gale. I haven't given it much time myself.

I am actually in the process of making a Game Art tool for MMF2 users. Its kind of in BETA right now. But its totally functional. I personally use it all the time. I've got lots of pictures for it too.

Its called Pix Army Knife, its on my site:
    http://www.crimsontheory.byethost6.com/pix.php

(please excuse the website design for now. I'm currently in the process of converting everything to WordPress.)

Here are some of its functions:
    • Tiled background designer.
    • Basic Pixel/Bitmap editor.
    • Easy Color Replace feature, for making palette swaps.
    • Sprite Outlining tool to automatically add drop-shadow or outlines to your sprite (of any color!).
    • Very nice, extensible palette loading feature.

Another invaluable tool I use often is Complex Software's Color Manager:
    http://complex.ovh.org/?p=./products/en_color_manager_more.htm&PHPSESSID=db7a597be2a4d3 56ad58781ecf4c04b7

Its great for organizing color schemes across many applications. For example, I'll often find a color scheme I like on a website, and use it for a game Sprite by copying the colors to Color Manager.
