How to Order The Enemies in front/ behind my character? Whaaaattttttt!?

So my game is an eight direction, and my character is a 2d sideways view of an army guy, giving it a 2.5 d look. Anyways, I have a condition for the enemies

" Y position of Army guy legs > Y action point of enemy soldier, move Army man behind enemy soldier. And it's the same for enemy soldiers moving in front of him.

Anyways, It works flawlessly when i have one enemy trooper to run by, but when i have multiple it only works for the enemy that i duplicated last. My army guy moves behind all the other soldiers and it looks awful. Im relatively new to this so help would be REALLY appreciated! Thanks!

Use the layer object and sort objects by Y or an alterable value.

Sounds good, can you explain a little bit further how I should set up the conditions?
