Character+Plus Item=New Sprite Set? Info please

    Hello,

So I have been thinking about this for a little while now. If I have a character that has all his normal sprites (frames) were he jumps, walks, crouch, etc...Then have an Item like a baseball bat or something that the character picks up. Do I have to make a new set of frames for walking, jumping, crouch, attack, and all that?

To have a game with multiple items would make it time consuming and frustrating having to make 1 characters sprites 50 times for 50 items. I was just wondering if there was an easier way to do this?

    Thanks!

The answer to that question depends on how you want the item to look when the player is holding it.

    1. I've seen games that have separate sprites for the items that float in front of the player when they are holding it, and display their own animations for attacking ect.

    2. I've also seen games that use a paperdolling system when the item has an animation that matches the player's animation to make it appear to be held.

You're right for (2) it would be time consuming, but it also looks better in the end. It's up to you to decide how you wish to tackle this problem!

Ahhh crap lol, I figured as much. But for it to look good I guess I'm stuck making the character have a sprite set of each item. Thanks for the info!
