    Exclamation Windows 7 problems

    Hi,

I've recently moved to a new computer. My previous computer used Windows XP, this one uses Windows 7. I've installed the latest version of MMF 2.0 Developer, and I'm having serious problems.

    - running a game works, but after exiting it, MMF still thinks it's running and can't be stopped except via the task manager
    - opening a frame is really slow

Since I'm in the middle of several major (commercial) projects, this is a very worrying situation. I've tried running MMF with administrator privileges, in XP compatibility mode, and I've also tried reinstalling it. Nothing makes any difference.

One odd thing I've noticed: if I start a new Standard project, the first problem doesn't happen. If I set the new project to run using DirectX, the problem reappears. Running an existing project as Standard doesn't work, though. (The speed problem is always there, though, and would make working on projects of this size a real pain.)

    I'd appreciate any help.

[I also own MMF 2.5, but until all the plug-ins I need are available, I'd rather stick with what I know.]

Do you have an ATI graphic card? There is an issue with some ATI drivers: if you select the DirectX or DirectX + VRAM mode, or if you select the "V-Sync" option, then this may happen. We have fixed it in CF 2.5 by totally removing these routines, it's not really easy to do in MMF2. Workaround in MMF2: open the task manager and kill the edrt.exe process so that MMF2 no longer thinks the runtime is running.

Not sure about the second problem. Do you mean in the editor or at runtime?

What plugins for 2.5 do you need?

I do now, yes. That may explain it. Do these problems only exist in the editor, or are there also known problems with ATI cards when running the actual games? My old games don't use DirectX mode, but I was interested in trying it out, because some things looked a lot smoother with it.

    In the editor.

Let's see, what do I use? I noticed there were quite a few when I tried 2.5 once. FontEmbed, Named variable object, YASO, Fast Function, Popup message object 2. Several of those are irrelevant to new projects and could easily enough be replaced with others, but it leaves me in a bad situation as regards updates to existing games.

These objects are available via the CF 2.5 extension manager.

For Font Embed, you can just copy the mfx files from the MMF2 folder to the CF 2.5 folder.

Not sure, but probably this also happens with games. You don't see it because it doesn't cause visible issues.

The DirectX modes are obsolete. Use the Direct3D 9 mode if possible, it's much faster (though it has some limitations in full screen mode, Windows controls don't work in this mode).

Thanks, I'll try it again, maybe I missed something last time.

You should really keep in mind that it's next to impossible to do a major commercial game without any kind of fullscreen mode, so such limitations can be a big problem for some developers.
