Tapping the spacebar as a madman

Ok I have this problem,

I want to make a small game where the player must tap the spacebar like an insane person to make a counter go up but if you start to tap slower the counter must drop too.
it must be really hard. I have tried some types of engines but they all work terrible.

does anyone have a small example of tutorial for this

I have something just like this but somehow mine did not work that great.
