Android Little Chat App

I'm currently working on a little chat app, so far it looks great, smooth and stuff, everything's great except for one little problem:
I cant figure out how to keep the app running in the background, and I don't know if it can be done.
So the thing is.. which method should I use to monitor incoming messages while the app is on the back (closed) and send phone notifications?.
Would gladly appreciate some suggestions n.n

no application runs on background, what others do

1.- send notifications. example like instagram or facebook, all coming from server using GCM.

2.- run a service which is a piece of code that independently runs on background but have no UI for it.
