Question about in and out transitions of objects.

Hi guys, I'm just wondering if there is a way to repeat the fade in and out options on an active object? In the properties, when you set the in and out to, for example : "fade" it only seems to work on the start of a frame. I'm trying to alter the object transitions but need them to happen every time a certain object appears. So when you press a certain key for example, the object positions itself and locks via an alterable value and used the fade in, then goes away when the alterable value is set back to 0.
* to be clear, this is not a question of using the "disappearing" animation, but the fade in and out options in the active properties.
