    Recreating a retro flamethrower?

    Hi everyone.

Right now I'm being perplexed by an issue that I thought was a lot more simpler than it was. I'm trying to recreate a retro looking flamethrower with a single spread but it gets greater as the flame travels upwards, I'm not quite sure how to implement it. I did thought get some nifty techniques out of it so that counts for something! The core inspiration is from Sonic & Knuckles, image below.

Any thoughts on how I could implement this?

I don't think this is quite as advanced as it looks. I think the flame actually doesn't spread more the further away it gets, that seems to be an illusion from it moving in a straight line while launching fire in other directions (due to the spread). I'm not sure, though. If that doesn't help, or if that isn't actually the case (E.G. you tried that and it looked quite different), I'll see if I can make an example (though if it turns out that you've already tried what I mentioned, then I personally haven't really bothered with making something like that before, so I don't know how much help I can be if I'm wrong with what I think is going on).

The closets I've come to recreating it is this attempt but you can easily tell it's not what I'm going for. I definitely want that sort of curve-y effect that comes out but I don't know how to naturally do it, instead I rely on a flag that turns on and switches it to the other direction.

Still managed to figure out some new techniques for the future boss battles so there's that at least.

    I see...

I may be able to make you an example to show you how to achieve it, but not at the moment, busy with watching the Super Bowl and all.
