    3D Objects in a 2D World?

    Hi all,

Is it possible to have 3D rotating objects in Fusion?

My biggest example is a game called Monument Valley. I know it was made in Unity but am wondering about the possibilities in Fusion 2.5 since I am still trying to decide what engine to go with.

Basically I would like to have an object, let's say a cube, be able to rotate on one axis at a time and be able to interact with each side by controlling an object over it.

To my understanding it can be done BUT fusion is not 3D tool, I'd say go with Unity.

Fusion isn't a 3D game engine, but I would like to point out that Unity is expensive (Fusion is probably cheaper partially because of the very fact that it's 2D). If price isn't a problem, and you've actually learned 3D modelling (unlike me), then maybe Unity would be worthwhile, or maybe you could go with Unreal Engine (either if price is a problem or you find it works out better), which I've heard became free recently, and is also a 3D engine.

Last note: There are some 3D extensions for Fusion, but they have pretty much all been abandoned, though I still have hopes for a new 3D extension...

I'm doing a career change, and cost is certainly a consideration. I've done somewhat simple 3d modeling in the past with Blender, and is actually enough for some of the basic startup ideas that I have IF I were to go with Unity. I've used Unreal before to mod a few maps, but have never tried making a full game with it.

I have 2d and 3d games projects in mind. I'm starting to think perhaps begin with fusion on the simpler projects then expand with different engines when going to 3d, or would it make more sense to start with a 3d engine, do the 2d projects with it in order to prepare for the future?

I think it really comes down to a small things like what are your strengths.

For example I had zero coding experience, but felt at home with graphics and audio. So I decided to use Fusion as coding with it is logical, easy and fast to learn.
I was able to create and sell my debut game, that is something I could not have done with Unity. At least so I feel!

If you are familiar with coding and 3D modelling/animating, then Unity might be a better idea. Though if you are doing 2D game Fusion is amazing tool!

What I'm trying to say, it comes down to a small things: What you want to create and how.

If you stick with the 2D route with Fusion, there's a couple of techniques to make 3D-like games.

One method is to "fake" the 3D experience by pre-rendering them as images. It might take a little longer to do, but it's achievable.
Here's a recent example of this technique: http://community.clickteam.com/threads/88460-Dungeoneer

The other one is a isometric perspective, which is like 2.5D (pseudo-3D), although they are more suited for worlds than for rotating cubes.

As J3sseM says, it depends on what you're looking to create. Fusion can be very powerful the more you get to know it.

If you're going for a Momument-Valleyesque idea, displaying a 3d model and rotating it would be cake with the 3d mesh tool. The issue would come in with mapping other objects/collisions/etc. I think collisions might even be impossible.

Unless you're just wanting to display a simple 3d mesh and scale/rotate it real time (ie: Background graphics/props/etc.) - I would use something other than MMF.

I have zero coding experience, too. For now.

So imagine looking at a map from above. Your character is walking forward, and the wall in front of him flips around to now see its other side. I can see how an isometric view can make it look 3d if rotating the wall. Almost like a gif. Just a series of images. The 3d mesh tool sounds like the trick! Of course, I would need collision, though. I'm sure that can be controlled with some type of invisible colorless wall.

It sounds as if I want to keep true perspective on objects when moving around a map (as in my above map view) I will need a 3d engine. If I am fine with seeing things in the same isometric view then static isometric images are fine.
