Smooth transparency gradient across variable width screen?

I have a simple need and am wondering the best way of doing it. At start of frame, I have a simple, single-color active stretch itself across the width of the screen to create a visual dividing line. I have also toyed with doing this by pasting the object into the background and repositioning it accordingly.

What I need is to have that visual line have a fade out effect as it reach across the screen. What's he best way to do that?

If you fade out the entire line that's pretty straightforward, could stretch the object and change semi-transparency.
If you want a smooth gradient with visible on one side and invisible on the other, you could try making the initial object a gradient, import a transparent .png or make it manually with alpha channel in the object/animation editor.
