    Midi Soundfonts

Hello, I'm wondering if there are any extensions for MMF2 that allow me to use my own Soundfont?

A soundfont is basically an instrument set for midi files.

By using Midis and Soundfonts for each song I can save up a lot of space in the final product.

    Thank you for your time.

I don't think anything can play with a custom soundfont, but you might want to look into mod/it files, they're like midi but include the samples they use so that they sound the same on all pcs. I think a few of the sound extensions can play them.

    Re: Midi Soundfonts

Basically, soundsfonts is a relatively complex soundbank format with lots of modulation features and filters, and it's unfortunately quite hard to create an extension for. The alternative to creating a sf2 synthesizer extension would be an extension that loads the soundbank into the system's or soundcard's own sf2 synthesizer, but that would only really work with some of creative's sound cards. It's definitely easier to just use .it or .xm files as MMF2 support them.

Well, as usual, the answer is - you can probably do it using Onu, since it supports Winamp plug-ins. There's might be a plugin for your needs.

    Re: Midi Soundfonts

Why not simply create mod music that uses your soundfont? Nifflas already mentioned *.it and *.xm

    Re: Midi Soundfonts

Uh? This is about wether MMF2 can support soundfonts or not, not generic ideas about odd synthesizer sounds vs. natural sounds, or the importance of specific sounds. Nobody even mentioned classical music here, and it's not even clear if Namo intends to use a GM soundbank, or even music that uses acoustic type of sounds.

And also, a good composer will want good sounds to go with good music. When you compose, you aren't given two opposite poles that forces you to position yourself somewhere between good music and good sounds. Both are so intertwined that you got to work with them closely together as if they are almost the same thing.

Anyway, SF2 is a sample based soundbank format designed for the midi protocol, and .xm and .it is a sample based music format, so in terms of sound capabilities they're not that much different, though you need to use different software to compose the songs.

The big difference between using MIDI files that use an SF2 and IT/XM/s3m is that you don't have to save sounds that you've already used, you can just use the same instrument, which is a huge plus for storage.

Storage isn't an issue nowadays, what you can save is minimal. That's why soundfonts were very popular in the old DOS days but they aren't anymore.
