How can I add a new layer?

Hi,

I want to add a 'gui' layer to my game, to show a: the lives/heath left and b: the current item carried. I want this gui to be on screen and in the same place all the time and in all my rooms.

I figure the best way to do this is to add a new layer? (like in photoshop or construct 2) and add the gui elements to that. however I can't seem to find a layer option.

what am I missing?

I don't think the layers are shown by default so press CTRL + K to bring up the Layer toolbar and then press the New Layer button.
