Creating an RPG game

Welcome to our brand new Clickteam Community Hub! We hope you will enjoy using the new features, which we will be further expanding in the coming months.

A few features including Passport are unavailable initially whilst we monitor stability of the new platform, we hope to bring these online very soon. Small issues will crop up following the import from our old system, including some message formatting, translation accuracy and other things.

Thank you for your patience whilst we've worked on this and we look forward to more exciting community developments soon!

  • I have to make a decision regarding which engine I should use to create an RPG game. As all of most of you on this forum love working with Clickteam Fusion. I feel it is an amazing tool to create virtually all types of games, but I am not sure if it is the best choice for developing an RPG with. I realize I would have to create all of the supporting foundation systems like inventory, classes, shops for buying and selling, NPC alliances (for example enemies, friendlies or neutral) etc., I am on the fence whether or not to undertake the enormous effort it will be to create the supporting systems or use a game engine which is geared to creating RPG games. My RPG engine choice would be 001 Game Creator which is a really extensive engine for creating RPG games with, however, in my opinion the documentation is really lacking in content and I find myself having to post questions on the 001 Discord channel which can take days to get an answer to a question. with Clickteam Fusion I can usually just google a question if I get stuck and get the answer quickly and if not, I can post on the Discord channel and get an answer quickly. Of course there are other RPG engines I could choose but I have tried most if not all of them and I find them lacking compared to 001 Game Creator.

So my question to everyone, has anyone tried creating an RPG game or is anyone currently creating one with Clickteam Fusion ? If so can you share some of your experiencing you have had doing it ?

I want to create a game like Ultima with a similar interface and also have dungeons with an interface like the later versions of Wizardy or Might and Magic. Can you recommend any sites that have information supporting the development I would like to do ?

  • Hello,
since you're on clickteam's patreon it seems to me that you could find some examples of basic RPG engines on the clickstore - some are free for patrons

  • you can certainly make an RPG using fusion. it really depends on your skill level. however - if your heart is set on RPG and deciding on an engine; well, without doubt, you just use RPG maker (they are on MZ) right now & use fusion for other projects.

Personally, I don't suggest using RM series due to bad performance & bad expansibility. Any change that exceeds its limit requires actual coding: you cannot make your own system easily. What you only can do is combine what exists by default or use a system script design & released by someone else (and crash if you are using several from different author), or you need to code it by yourself, in a Ruby dialect or JavaScript. System is somewhat the core of RPG, it must have something unique, and cannot be made by using someone else's.
The worst thing is, if you want to modify UI, you have to hard code the coord, size & content of a window. For pre-MV era a frequently used trick is event UI, use lots of pictures and global events to handle UI, and this still requires coding to disable default UI, and it's not work now days as MV brings mouse support.

I have used it for years, made one and a half games, and found that my ideas are limited to its default skeleton. Although Fusion is also codeless but at least you can make unique things and don't need to code that fast, until you need performance or something events cannot handle like recursive.

  • In terms of organising and planning your RPG universe, you might find Articy: Draft useful, possibly regardless of which game engine you end up using. I find it helpful for planning storyboards for cutscenes and scripted sequences, though I only use a small fraction of its features. It's also used for keeping track of NPCs, dialogue trees, inventory systems, map locations, game progression, and so on. I imagine that stuff in an RPG could quickly become a confusing spiderweb without some kind of good organisational tool. Articy: Draft 3 is relatively expensive, but from what I can tell isn't hugely different from Articy: Draft 2 (which I have), and which would be cheaper (if it's still for sale somewhere).

As for which engine to use, I only really know Fusion so I can't offer much of an objective opinion. But any sort of an RPG sounds like a very ambitious undertaking, especially if you have any gameplay or design ideas that might require bespoke development, which it sounds like you may. I know nothing about 001 Game Creator, but from your description, it sounds like it might offer a smoother and more streamlined experience in certain areas, but a rockier and more trying experience when things get more complicated (due to the poor documentation and less developed community resources). If it were me, I would assume that things will get complicated a lot, so I would opt for the engine which will be less painful in those complicated times X). It doesn't matter how streamlined the easy parts were if the difficult parts end up causing you to hit a wall or run out of steam...
